Salinas
Martha’s Kitchen started delivering meals to two organizations in Salinas in March 2015 to help them serve the increasing number of people needing help. Half of the homeless in Monterey county are in Salinas and most of them are in the China Town/Sherwood area served by Dorothy’s Place. At Dorothy’s Place, a ministry of the Franciscan Workers the homeless can take a shower, get counseling and eat hot meals. It provides shelter and food relying on an army of volunteers. The dining room is called Dorothy’s Kitchen. Although there is a homeless encampment right outside their door, the volunteers and those being helped make an effort to keep the area around Dorothy’s Place clean.
First Methodist Church is the other Salinas organization getting meals from Martha’s Kitchen. They provide a weekday hot lunch; day room with television, telephones and Internet; a mobile health clinic in con- junction with Clinica de Salud; mental health services via the nonprofit Interim Inc.; literacy training; and distribution of clothes, food or household items.
